Hi, I’m Phil @phillyon89 I began adventuring before I even knew I was. Family holidays were always UK based. I used to get jealous of friends going abroad, but I am so lucky to have seen so many beautiful parts of the UK from such an early age.
I upped my game around 5 years back when I discovered the joys of hiking solo, discovered I didn’t mind my own company and no longer had to wait for other people to be available before I could go exploring. Although I do still love having someone out there to enjoy it with!
My biggest challenge over the past 10 years or so has been my mental health. The mountains have a way of grounding me, lifting me up and cleansing my mind. Giving me the space to process everything I need to. Providing me with an escape from everyday life that I leave behind when I head out hiking. Not a cure for mental health issues but certainly aiding me along in my continued recovery.
My advice to someone looking to start hiking… Get the right gear so you are safe, start small and adventure with a smile on your face! The outdoors community on Instagram is one of the most inviting and inclusive. So if you have questions or want company message someone. There are so many people out there willing to show you the ropes!
Thanks for sharing Phil, and you’re right about solo hiking. It’s great to be able to get out as much as you want, and the Instagram community really is full of gems 😊
