Hi, I’m Ben @adventuresofbenandarch from Durham. I’m relatively new to hiking, but I’ve always been enthusiastic about the landscape and photography (especially the Lake District) so much so I studied photography at university.
From a young age, I remember always wanting a dog. I finally got myself a collie called Archie. Having him meant I started walking a lot more, and there’s just so much scenery to capture.
I lost my Dad at a young age to brain cancer and really struggled managing various mental health issues. As I started to get out with Archie more, I started to feel a lot better even if it was just a short walk.
This very quickly lead to me hiking a lot more and climbing the fells in the lakes, the feeling I got doing it, soon became an obsession and is still to this day.
The improvement in my health and well being has been dramatic and its just motivated me to do it more and more. Now I’ll hike for something so minor as getting past a stressful day at work. I’m 100% a better person for it mentally and physically. The health benefits all round are just amazing and if that isn’t enough to kick start someone to get out walking, I don’t know what is!
I’m currently training and raising money to climb the three peaks in July for CLIC Sargent who support children with cancer. Two years ago I wouldn’t have been able to climb a flight of stairs without being out of breath, so the three peaks were just unimaginable.
Mountains are good for the mind, no doubt about it 👟🏔 There are so many beautiful places to explore in the UK, Durham has some lovely spots too.
Nature really is the best therapy, thanks for sharing your story Ben 😊
